BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Auburn outfielder Javon Moran went four-for-four with three runs scored and first baseman Scott Schade drove in four runs as the Tigers (11-4) defeated UAB 13-1 Tuesday evening at Young Memorial Field.
Auburn wasted little time, jumping on UAB starter Jon Burgett for three runs in the top of the first inning, highlighted by a two-run double by Schade.
UAB responded with a run in the bottom of the first as center fielder Chad House led off with a single, moved to third on a single by the next batter, second baseman Seth Rollin, and then scored on a fielder's choice by first baseman Matt Womble.
House and Rollin both went two-for-four on the evening for UAB.
Auburn quickly broke the game open in the second inning, loading the bases and then scoring five times as Schade hit his second two-run double of the game and catcher Trent Pratt followed with a three-run homer, chasing Burgett from the game.
The Tigers tacked on three more runs in the third on a two-run single by Moran, which scored shortstop Chuck Jeroloman and Sean Gamble, making the score 11-1.
Auburn scored a single run in the fifth on an RBI single by second baseman Jonathan Schuerholz and in the eighth as pinch hitter Lance Reynolds doubled and scored on an error by UAB's Rollin.
Tiger starter Arnold Hughey (1-0) got the win in his first collegiate start, working five complete innings, allowing one run on six hits, with no walks and three strikeouts.
Burgett (0-2) took the loss in his first start of 2002, working one and 2/3 innings, allowing eight runs (two earned) on six hits, with two walks and two strikeouts.
Auburn will be in action again Wednesday, playing at Samford (6 pm). UAB hosts Connecticut in a three game series this weekend, with a double-header Saturday (1 pm) and a single game Sunday (1 pm).
