Baseball Defeats Alabama State Tuesday

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - UAB right fielder Eric Lyon drove in four runs with a pair of two RBI doubles and left fielder Mitch Jones and catcher Justin Miller each had two RBI as UAB defeated Alabama State 10-3 Tuesday evening at rain-soaked Young Memorial Field.
UAB (7-9) broke the game open with seven runs in the bottom of the second inning. Jones led off with a solo home run to left center field and Alabama State starter Barry Howard walked five Blazer batters and gave up three more hits in the inning before being replaced by Kenny Hudson.
Lyon drove in two runs with a bases-loaded double in the second, and center fielder also had an RBI single, one of three hits on the eveing for the freshman from Memphis, Tenn.
The Hornets (8-9) picked up a run in the top of the third as shortstop
Bartkawski Cowan led off with a single and eventually scored on a fielder's choice by left fielder Joseph Moffat.
UAB scored a run in the bottom of the fourth on a single by Miller, which scored Jones, making the score 8-1.
Alabama State scored in the fifth inning as Cowan doubled with one out, stole third and scored as center fielder Ashley Allen was thrown out by Miller while attempting to steal second base. The Hornets' third run of the eveing came in the eighth on on a groundout by first baseman Hector Desadeleer, which scored left fielder Donald Johnson.
UAB starter Ryan Huffman (1-1) got the win, working two complete innings, allowing no runs on one hit, with two walks and four strikeouts. Alabama State's Howard was the losing pitcher, allowing seven runs on four hits, with seven walks and two strikeouts.
UAB begins Conference USA play Friday (March 15), hosting 12th-ranked Houston at Young Memorial Field. First pitch is set for 7:00 pm CST.
