Baseball Hammers Mississippi Valley State Saturday

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -
Six different UAB players drove in runs and starting pitcher Andre Parks allowed one unearned run in five innings of work as the Blazers defeated Mississippi Valley State 11-3 Saturday afternoon at Young Memorial Field.
The Blazers (1-2) broke on
top in the bottom of the fourth inning as catcher Al Hecklinski drove a two-out double into the left field corner
and scored moments later on an RBI single by designated hitter Quincey
Williams.
Mississippi Valley (0-9)
tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the fifth as center fielder Fred Steele led off with a single, moved to third on a throwing
error by UAB's Parks, and scored on an error by Blazer second baseman Seth
Rollin.
UAB reclaimed the lead in
the bottom of the fifth as third baseman Matt Gaulden led off with a double and scored on the next play on
an error by Mississippi Valley third baseman Anthony Webb, who was trying to make a play on a bunt by UAB center
fielder Chad House.? House later scored from third base on
an errant pick-off throw to first base by Delta Devil pitcher Trey Wall.
UAB added two more runs in
the sixth as right fielder Kyle Leon led off with a double and Hecklinski followed with an RBI triple into
the right field corner, and shortstop Mark Garner drove in Hecklinski from third on a squeeze
bunt.?
The Blazers added a run in
the seventh as House scored on the third of three wild pitches in the inning by
Mississippi Valley State reliever Ryan Neely.
The Delta Devils scored
twice in the top of the eighth inning as left fielder Robert Reynolds drove in a run with a double off UAB reliever Kevin
Brannon, advanced to third on the
next play, and then scored on a groundout by catcher Tim Klick.
UAB erupted for five more
runs in the bottom of the eighth, highlighted by a two-run double by first
baseman Matt Womble and an RBI
single by Jones.
Parks (1-0) earned the
victory in his first start of the season, allowing one unearned run on five hits,
with no walks and seven strikeouts in five innings of work.?
Mississippi Valley's
Wall (0-4) was the losing pitcher, working six complete innings, allowing five
runs on eight hits with two walks and four strikeouts.
UAB completes its weekend
home stand Sunday afternoon with a 1 pm game vs. Kentucky at Young Memorial Field.?
Right-hander Ross Dobbins
(0-0) is the scheduled starting
pitcher for the Blazers.
