Volleyball Team Tops East Carolina 3-0 At Bartow Arena

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - UAB (6-12, 1-2 Conference USA) defeated East Carolina (4-13, 0-3 C-USA) 30-28, 30-23, 30-26 in Conference USA volleyball action Saturday evening at Bartow Arena.
Senior right side hitter Kristi Lee had 17 kills, six digs and hit for .314 to lead UAB. Junior outside hitter Martina Shields recorded her team-leading sixth double-double of the season, as she posted 14 kills and 11 digs, while hitting for .458 for UAB. Senior setter Dina Katsoulis added 33 assists for the Blazers.
"We are very excited about this win," said UAB head coach Melinda Claiborne. "Martina has really come on and given us some great performances. She has been a real highlight for us.
"We are still struggling in getting the ball to our middles, but we hope to work that out in practice. I thought overall it was a good, solid performance. We are still fine tuning a few things, but we are really happy with the win."
Sophomore outside hitter Sarah Vick had nine kills and five digs to lead East Carolina. Sophomore setter Jessica Vick added 12 assists and five digs for the Pirates.
East Carolina returns home to Williams Arena Saturday to face DePaul at 7 p.m. (ET).
UAB travels to Murfreesboro, Tenn. Tuesday to take on Middle Tennessee at 7 p.m.
