HOUSTON, Texas-----The UAB women's soccer team (5-7-1, 2-3-0 C-USA) beat the Cougars of Houston (5-6-2, 1-2-2), 1-0, on a goal by senior Cindy Penaranda in the 84th minute. The victory snapped the Cougars' eight-game home winning streak.
Penaranda scored at the 83:15 mark, taking a deflected shot from Jana Brauer and putting it in the upper-right corner of the net past Houston goalie Erin Ferguson on an unassisted goal. It was the second goal of the season by Penaranda. Goalkeeper Lisa Nowoslawski got her second shutout of the season, saving seven shots in 90 minutes.
"For the last couple of weeks, we've been playing well, doing the right things, but we haven't gotten the lucky breaks," said head coach Paul Harbin. "Tonight, we did the right things for the entire match and eventually got a few breaks. If you do the right things over and over, you sometimes get the win."
Houston threatened on two corner kicks as the clock wound down. Senior Ashley Fortenberry's first corner kick with just over five minutes remaining was deflected by a UAB defender, and the second with barely 20 seconds remaining was cleared by the Blazer defense.
"Lisa did a great job of organizing our defense," said Harbin. She came up with a huge save at the end of the game to preserve the win and shutout."
The Cougars outshot the Blazers 15-10 overall on the night, including 7-6 on goal. In the scoreless first half, Houston out shot UAB, 9-5, and Cougar goalie Ferguson recorded four of her five saves on the night.
The Blazers next travel to TCU to battle the Horned Frogs on Sunday, October 13, at 1:00 p.m.
