Women's Basketball Falls To Southern Miss

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - La'Tasha Sumerall had 19 points, Tierra Lassiter posted 17 points and Sonja Brown added 12 points to help lift Southern Miss (9-9, 2-3 Conference USA) to a 75-57 victory over UAB (8-10, 0-5 C-USA) in Conference USA women's basketball action at Green Coliseum.
The Golden Eagles shot 47.4 percent from three-point range, led by Sumerall, who was 5-6 from behind the three-point arc. Overall, Southern Miss shot 41.9 percent from the field and held UAB to 33.9 percent shooting from the floor.
Southern Miss also won the battle of the boards, outrebounding UAB 44-38.
Natasha Thomas led UAB with 15 points and 12 rebounds. It marked her 13th double-double of the season. Lia Green had a career high 13 points and Allison Graham added 12 points for the Lady Blazers.
With the exception of a 2-2 tie with 18:06 remaining to play in the first half, Southern Miss never trailed. The Golden Eagles led by as many as 20 points in the first half and 21 in the second. The closest UAB would come in the second half was an 11-point deficit, trailing 47-36 with 13:33 remaining to play in the game.
Southern Miss shot an overwhelming 50.0 percent from the field, 63.6 percent from three-point range and 83.3 percent from the free throw line in the first half.
Sumerall had 14 first half points and was 5-6 from the floor and a perfect 4-4 from three-point territory.
The Golden Eagles used a 10-0 run late in the first half to stretch their lead to 20 points at 40-20 with 2:02 remaining to play in the half.
The Golden Eagles held UAB to 31.3 percent shooting from the field and led 40-24 at halftime.
UAB next travels to Cincinnati Friday to take on the Bearcats in a C-USA match up at 6 p.m.
