BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Rachel Klug had 20 points and Rashida Gales added 10 points to help lift Marquette (9-7, 2-1 Conference USA) to a 65-42 victory over UAB (8-8, 0-3 C-USA) in Conference USA women's basketball action at Bartow Arena.
The Golden Eagles shot 42.3 percent from the field and 44.4 percent from three point range. Klug was 9-13 from the floor (69.2%) and Gales shot 4-8 from the field (50.0 percent) to lead Marquette.
Marquette held UAB to 22.6 percent shooting from the floor and 13.3 percent from three point territory. The Golden Eagles also won the battle of the boards, outrebounding UAB 48-42.
"This is another big disappointment," said UAB Head Coach Jeannie Milling. "I thought we were going to be able to rise above some of the problems we have with scoring. Until we figure out a way to score, we are going to keep having problems. It is hard for the team to deal with it and keep the intensity on the court. We have a lot of problems and it is not just scoring. It is a confidence factor now and we are not going to get it back until we get a win. This team has just got to pull together until they get it. They have to not give up. We were taken out of our game and Marquette did a good job of preparing for us."
Michelle Smith led UAB, recording her third double-double in as many games with 13 points and 12 rebounds.
The first half was a back and fourth battle that saw the score tied on five different occasions. The largest lead by either team was a four point Marquette advantage at the 11:09 mark of the first half. The Golden Eagles led 22-20 at the half.
Marquette used a 12-0 run at the beginning of the second half to stretch their lead to 14 at 36-22. The Golden Eagles would lead from that point on. The closest UAB came was an 11 point margin on two occasions, the last coming at 38-27 with 13:03 remaining to play in the game.
UAB next travels to New Orleans, La. to take on C-USA rival Tulane Friday at 7 p.m.
