Volleyball Wins Hurricane Invitational

CORAL GABLES, Fla. - The UAB volleyball team captured the Hurricane Invitational championship by defeating Miami 3-2 here Saturday morning.
The Blazers (6-1, 0-0 Conference USA) defeated the Hurricanes(3-3) 14-30, 18-30, 30-17, 30-26, 15-13 to win the tournament. The Blazers record was unblemished in three matches after they beat Long Island 3-0 and Wofford 3-1 late Friday evening in their other two matches in the event.
The Blazers looked to be in trouble early in the match as the Hurricanes won 14-30 and 18-30 in game one and two.
The Blazers rallied back in game three as junior right side hitter Kristi Lee (Birmingham, Ala.) scored seven kills on 12 attacks. The Blazers took game three 30-17.
In the fourth game, the Blazers continued to rally as they went on to win 30-26 forcing a fifth and deciding game.
In the final game of the match, UAB scored seven kills on 13 attacks (.384) compared to Miami's five kills on 21 attacks (.047). The Blazers took game five 15-13, the match 3-2 and were named tournament champions.
At the conclusion of the tournament, Lee was named Tournament MVP and to the All-tournament team. Sophomore middle blocker Karen Boyd (Troy, Ill.) and senior outside hitter Shelly Greene (Bend, Ore.) were also named to the All-Tournament team.
UAB plays next at Mississippi State on Sept. 11 in Starkville, Miss at 7 p.m.
