Vladulescu Headlines Women's Tennis All-Conference Selections

For the third time in four years senior Mirela Vladulescu, of the UAB womens tennis team was named Conference USA Player of the Year as announced by the Conference Office in Chicago today. For her outstanding play, Vladulescu also received first team All-Conference honors for the fourth consecutive year. Junior Monika Schmid and freshman Margaux Melsheimer also earned All-Conference honors.
Vladulescu led the Blazers to an 21-3 overall record and a second place finish in the Conference USA Tournament. Currently ranked No. 23 in the nation in singles in the latest ITA rankings, Vladulescu compiled a 31-2 overall record and was 21-1 in dual match play at the No. 1 spot. The Liemen, Germany native went 5-1 against ranked players this season and was the highest-ranked player in the conference, reaching as high as No. 22. She was 25-5 this season in doubles play with partner Schmid, and is currently ranked No. 41 in the doubles rankings. Her career record now stands at 115-16.
Schmid, finished the regular season with a 29-7 overall record. The native of Siegsdorf, Germany went 21-2 in dual match play and 7-1 in C-USA. During the fall, Schmid ranked as high as 68 in the ITA singles rankings, her career record is now 81-23. Schmid and Vladulescu, are currently ranked No. 41 in the nation, and have an overall record of 25-5. This is the third consecutive year Schmid has earned All-Conference USA honors.
Earning her first All-Conference honors, Melsheimer finished the regular season with a 27-7 overall record. The Oberkirk, Germany native went 18-2 in dual match play and 6-0 in C-USA. Melsheimer and doubles partner Femke deBoer, the doubles team went 21-11 overall with a 16-5 mark in dual match play.
Tulane's David Schumacher was named Coach of the Year for the 2001 season, while Marquette freshman Genevieve Charron received Freshman of the Year honors after her standout season for the Golden Eagles.
First year head Coach David Schumacher led No. 44 Tulane to its first Conference USA tournament tile and an automatic bid to the NCAA Championship. This marks the second tournament appearance for the Green Wave in the last three seasons.
First team All-Conference honorees include: three-time selection Anna Monhartova of Tulane, Houston's Sarah Borwell, Cincinnati's Kara Molony, Marquette's Laura Garcia, four-time honoree Vladulescu of UAB and South Florida's Tina Harrison.
Players receiving second team All-Conference recognition were: Tulane's Julie Morris and Joyce Bergman, UAB's Schmid, Christina Ladyman of Memphis, along with DePaul's Laura Taylor and Szilivia Kelmen.
Rounding out the awards for third team All-Conference are: Katie McLaughlin of Louisville, Freshman of the Year Genevieve Charron of Marquette, Tulane's Nancy Kockott, UAB's Melsheimer, Houston's Jen Baccarani and Julie Siemers of Saint Louis.
