AUBURN, Ala. - Auburn scored eight runs in the seventh inning to beat UAB 15-3 in a game called after seven innings due to the collegiate 12-run rule.
The Blazers (22-20) lost for the first time in the last five games to a Southeastern Conference opponent while also dropping a contest against an in-state opponent for the first time in six games this season.
Trent Pratt led five Tiger players with two or more hits as he notched three. Javon Moran, Gabe Gross and Adam Faust each added two safeties and a pair of RBI. Todd Faulkner also added two hits for Auburn.
Auburn (30-12) scored in each of the first three innings and six of seven as they plated a pair of runs in the second and third frames. The wheels came off for the Blazers in the seventh as the first eight players in the inning reached base and all scored.
Down 1-0 in the second, UAB tied the score with a RBI single from Matt Gaulden. The Tigers, though, extended that lead and held a 7-1 advantage before the Blazers cut into the lead.
In the seventh, UAB took advantage of three Auburn errors in the inning and got a run on a throwing error by the catcher before Al Hecklinski, who led UAB with three hits, notched a run-scoring single.
Rob Caputo (2-4) lasted 2 2/3 innings and allowed five runs (four earned) on six hits and four walks to go along with a strikeout to suffer the loss. Brett Speigner (1-0) started for the Tigers and went three innings, limited the Blazers to a run on four hits with two walks and a strikeout.
The game was a makeup of a rainout from a day earlier.
UAB returns to action when they play the first of a three-game Conference USA series Friday at Tulane. Game time is 6:30 p.m.
