Blazers Defeat Memphis 4-2 In Series Finale Sunday

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Four different Blazers drove in a run to lead UAB to a 4-2 Conference USA baseball victory over Memphis here Sunday afternoon at Young Memorial Field.
The Blazers (22-19 overall, 5-13 in C-USA) won its first series since the opening week of league play when they defeated Saint Louis here in mid-March.
Ross Dobbins (5-3) went seven strong innings for the Blazers, limiting Memphis (23-17, 9-9) to two runs on three hits and three walks with seven strikeouts to garner the victory.
After falling behind 1-0 on a RBI single by the Tigers' Barrett Smith, UAB rallied for two runs in the second.
A single by Mark Garner and hit by pitch to Nick Clark gave UAB runners at first and second with no outs. A wild pitch moved the pair up a base before Keith Barnes delivered his league-leading 10th sacrifice hit of the season to score the Blazers' first run. Matt Gaulden followed with a single up the middle to plate Clark and UAB led 2-1.
Mitch Jones, who led off the fifth with a single and then went to third on a pair of wild pitches, scored on a fielder's choice when the ground ball hit to first was thrown late to the plate to make the score 3-1.
A solo home run by UM's Tyler Shelton, his third of the year, cut the gap to one run in the seventh but the Blazers tacked on its final tally in the bottom of the frame on a double to right center by Christian Reimers.
UM starter Bill Edwards (3-3) got tagged with the loss as he surrendered three runs on seven hits while fanning four.
UAB returns to the road for the first of four games away from home Tuesday when they travel to Auburn for a 6 p.m. single contest. The Tigers are slated to travel to Tennessee-Martin for a 7 p.m. contest Tuesday as well.
