CINCINNATI - Craig Tewes notched a game-winning single in the bottom of the 11th scoring Kevin Youkilis to lift Cincinnati to a 9-8 Conference USA baseball victory over UAB here Sunday at Johnny Bench.
The win for the Bearcats (21-15, 7-8 in C-USA) gave them a three-game sweep of the Blazers. It was the first series win in six tries for UC over the Blazers since joining C-USA and the first three-game sweep.
Youkilis led the Bearcats on the afternoon by notching five singles in six at bats, along with scoring three times and driving home two runs.
UAB (19-18, 3-12) took a 5-3 lead after three innings. The Blazers scored their first run on Brandon Isbell's second home run - a solo shot - in the second. Al Hecklinski, who drove in 12 runs in five games during the week, blasted a grand slam in the third for his fourth his fourth round-tripper of the season to put the Blazers ahead.
UC, though, retook the advantage with a pair of runs in the sixth. Hamblen drove in the tying run with a single. The Bearcats then got its go-ahead run on a fielding error by second baseman Keith Barnes that allowed the tie-breaking run to score.
Youkilis then added a two-run single one inning later to make the score 8-5 for the home squad.
UAB closed the gap in the eighth on a RBI single by Matt Gaulden. The Blazers then sent the game into extra frames as they drew a pair of walks and then a hit batter, before making the scoring 8-7 with another walk. A sacrifice fly by Eric Lyon tied the score at eight.
UAB's third pitcher, Blake Allen, threw the final three innings for the Blazers and allowed an unearned run on three hits and a pair of walks to suffer the loss and fall to 3-3.
Brad Hunt (2-0), the fourth Bearcat pitcher of the afternoon, threw the final three frames and allowed just a hit and two walks to notch the victory.
The Blazers return to action Tuesday when they travel to Jacksonville State for a 6 p.m. tilt.
