Baseball Falls To Cincinnati Saturday 14-3

CINCINNATI - Cincinnati broke open an early tied game with a six-run third inning explosion to go on to a 14-3 Conference USA baseball victory over UAB here Saturday afternoon at Johnny Bench Field.
Craig Tewes had a pair of hits and drove in a game-high three runs to pace the Bearcats (20-15 overall, 6-8 in C-USA). Three other UC players drove in a pair of runs including Matt Singer Justin Niefer and Geoff Gordon.
With the score tied at three, UAB starter Joe McRae (1-3) walked the bases loaded to open the frame. The Blazers then went to their bullpen for Jeremy Hudson. UC scored its first run on a fielder's choice, while Neifer and Kevin Wilson followed with RBI singles. Another fielder's choice led to UC's fourth run, before Brett Clark notched a run-scoring single with the final run of the stanza scoring on an error later on the play.
Tewes got the Bearcats going with a two-run single in the first and UC led 3-0 after a frame.
The Blazers (19-17, 3-11) tied the score at three in the third by plating a pair on RBI singles by Eric Lyon and Al Hecklinski with the final run coming on a fielding error.
In all, the Blazers tallied 12 singles and a double for the contest, but left nine runners stranded and hit into four double plays.
McRae lasted two-plus innings and allowed six runs on three hits with six walks to take the loss.
UC starter Tony Maynard (1-0) went six strong frames and scattered 11 singles, while allowing three runs (two earned) and fanning five.
The Blazers, which lost to the Bearcats 11-5 Friday, will look to get a win in the final game of the series Sunday in a 1 p.m. EDT start.
