BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - UAB took advantage of five Alabama errors, including three in a four-run fifth inning, as the Blazers recorded a 6-5 non-conference baseball victory over the Crimson Tide here Wednesday night at Young Memorial Field.
The Blazers (19-15) beat the Alabama (23-14) for the second time in as many days. UAB won Tuesday's game in Tuscaloosa 10-6.
Down 3-1 in the fifth, the Blazers took advantage of the Tide miscues with Al Hecklinski getting things started by being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to cut the gap to one. UAB tied the game one batter later on a throwing error as Chris George reached on a fielder's choice. Brandon Isbell and Matt Gaulden completed the scoring as each notched RBI singles to make the score 5-4.
Another Alabama fielding error one inning later led to a UAB run, as shortstop Mark Garner singled to right with runners at first and second. The ball to Tide right fielder Peter Stonard was misplayed and UAB led 6-4.
Alabama cut the deficit to one run as first baseman Aaron Clark led off the seventh with a solo home run. The Tide also got a solo home run from shortstop Casey Lambert and UAB center fielder Brandon Holmes blasted his first of the season for the Blazers in the third inning.
UAB reliever Ross Dobbins (4-3) hurled four and 2/3 innings of relief to earn the win, limiting the Crimson Tide to two runs (one earned) on six hits and three strikeouts. Blake Allen got the final out of the game to earn his third save of the year.
Alabama starter B.J. Green (3-1), went four and 1/3 innings to suffer the loss. Green allowed five runs (one earned) on four hits and two walks with one strikeout.
The Blazers return to action this weekend as the play at Cincinnati for a C-USA series, while the Tide travel to Tennessee for a Southeastern Conference three-game tilt.
