UAB Baseball Defeats Tennessee Tech 7-4

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -
?BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Chris George and Mark Garner each drove in two runs and starting pitcher Ross Dobbins ran his record to 3-0 as UAB (6-4) defeated Tennessee Tech (3-8) 7-4 in game one of a double-header at Young Memorial Field Sunday afternoon.
It was the first baseball since Feb. 25 for the Blazers, who had four consecutive games rained out during the week, including scheduled games vs. Tennessee Tech on Friday and Saturday.??
UAB put up four runs in the bottom of the first inning as George and rightfielder Eric Lyon each had RBI singles and Garner had a two-RBI single.
Tennessee Tech responded with one run in the top of the second on a solo home run by first baseman Mark Gilliam, and another in the third on a sacrifice fly by catcher Ben Cunningham that scored second baseman Wes Dunn.
UAB took a 5-2 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning as second baseman Nick Clark drove in center fielder Cory Acklus with a single.
Tennessee Tech closed the gap to 5-4 in the top of the seventh as Gilliam ripped a two-out double down the left field line, scoring Cunningham and right fielder Mike Fessler.
UAB added insurance an insurance run in the seventh as Lyon led off with a single, advanced to second on a bunt single by catcher Al Hecklinski, then moved to third on a fly ball by Garner. ?With Acklus at the plate, Lyon was able to score on a double steal as the Golden Eagles attempted to make a play on Hecklinski at second base.
The Blazers added another run in the eighth inning as George drove in left fielder Mitch Jones from third with a sacrifice fly.
Dobbins worked five complete innings, allowing two runs on five hits with three walks and two strikeouts.? Reliever Scott Gibson worked the final two innings, allowing no runs on one hit to earn his first save of the season.
Tennessee Tech starter Donnie Long (1-2) worked six complete innings, allowing five runs on nine hits with five walks and five strikeouts.
