UAB Baseball Defeats Vanderbilt

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -
UAB third baseman Matt Gaulden drove in three runs with three RBI singles and pitchers Rob Caputo and Jeremy Hudson scattered four hits as the Blazers (8-4) defeated Vanderbilt (10-3) 6-1 Tuesday afternoon at Young Memorial Field.
It was the fifth straight win for UAB.
The Blazers took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as first baseman Chris George, right fielder Eric Lyon and Gaulden each drove in runs with singles.
Vanderbilt scored its lone run of the game in the top of the fourth as right fielder Worth Scott led off with a double down the right field line and scored on third baseman Andy Freeman's single.
UAB added a run in the bottom of the sixth as catcher Al Hecklinski doubled into the left field corner with one out and then scored as Gaulden drove him in with a two-out single to left field.
The Blazers added two insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth inning as Lyon led off with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Hecklinski and scored on a single by designated hitter Brandon Isbell, and Gaulden drove in Isbell with his third RBI single of the day.
UAB starter Caputo (1-1) worked five complete innings, allowing one run on three hits with four walks and two strikeouts.?? Hudson earned his first save of the season with four innings of work, allowing only one hit with no walks and three strikeouts.
Vanderbilt starter Robert Ransom (2-1) worked six complete innings, allowing four runs on eight hits with one walk and five strikeouts.
