Blazers Drop Two To Jacksonville State

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.... Jacksonville State (3-1, 0-0 TransAmerica Athletic Conference) swept a doubleheader against UAB (3-9, 0-0 Conference USA), winning the first game 4-1 and taking the second 3-0 in softball action at George Ward Park.
In the first game UAB went up 1-0 in the first inning on a Kai Paul single that drove in Jessica Brown.
Jacksonville State tied the score in the fourth on Andrea Tomey's single that drove in Tanya Carter.
The Gamecocks took the lead in the fifth, scoring three runs to break the game open. With one out in the inning, Tina Hill reached on an error. After a fly out by Renee Hasan to left field, Carter walked. Tomey then singled, driving in Hill. Laura Buck doubled, allowing Carter and Tomey to score.
Jill Wilcoxson (2-0) went the distance for the Gamecocks, striking out three. Kelli Thompson (1-3) picked up the loss for the Blazers with a complete game performance, striking out five.
The second game was a scoreless tie through five innings of play. Jacksonville State struck again in the fifth, putting three runs on the board. Buck doubled in Hasan and Carter and Tomey scored on error by Jessica Brown in left field.
Terra Ross (1-0) had the complete game shutout for the Gamecocks, recording five strikeouts. Kerri Foster (2-4) went the distance for the Blazers, striking out four.
UAB returns home to George Ward Park Saturday to face in-state rival Alabama A&M in a doubleheader, starting at 1 p.m.
