BIRMINGHAM, Alabama - Deanna Jackson scored 29 points and pulled down 18 rebounds to lead UAB's women's basketball team to an easy 96-47 win over the Atlanta Shooters in an exhibition game Sunday afternoon at Bartwo Arena.
Freshman Natasha Thomas scored 14 points and had 13 rebounds in her first collegiate appearance. The Lady Blazers outrebounded the Shooters 61-40 and forced 40 turnovers. UAB had 16 turnovers.
"I thought the second half was much better than the first half," said UAB head coach Jeannie Milling. "We rebounded better, especially on the defensive end, and got 31 offensive boards ourselves."
UAB struggled in the opening minutes of the game leading just 17-15 midway through the first half. "We got into a better rhthym as the game went on, especially in the second half," said Milling. "We did not shoot the ball well, particularly in the first half, and that concerns me some."
The Lady Blazers opened up a 40-25 halftime lead and extened it to as much as 81-35. In addition to Jackson and Thomas, three other Lady Blazers scored in double figures. Mia Thrash added 15 points Shaquetta Rhodes scored 10 points with nine rebounds, and Brandi Stallings scored 10.
"We got some good playing time for all of players, especially our freshmen. I thought the new players contributed well and will contribute well this season."
UAB opens its regular season, Friday night at the Nevada Bell Tournament. UAB plays the host Nevada. The other two teams in the tournament are Colorado State and Idaho.
