UAB Falls in opener 79-63 to Nevada

RENO, Nevada - Kate Smith scored 25 points as Nevada overcame a 6-point second half deficit in defeating UAB 79-63 in the first round of the Nevada Bell Classic in Reno, Nevada. It was the season opener for both teams.
Deanna Jackson scored 29 points and pulled down 18 rebounds for the Lady Blazers. She scored 12 points in the second half.
UAB will play Idaho, Saturday at 7 p.m. CST in the consolation game. Idaho lost to Colorado State 71-60 in the first game.
UAB led 37-34 at the half scored the first three points of the second half, to lead 40-34. However, Angie Heer hit two 3-pointers that put the Wolf Pack up 55-51. UAB never got closer than three points the rest of the way.
Another key turning point was when Jackson picked up her third foul at the 17:29 mark of the half and UAB leading 42-26.
The Lady Blazers shot just 28 percent from the field in the second half, after hitting 52 percent in the first half. Nevada shot 45 percent in the second half after shooting 37 percent in the first.
Nevada made 26-of-37 free throws to 14-of-18 for the Lady Blazers. The Wolf Pack also outrebounded UAB 39-38, a margin of 26-17 in the second half.
Mia Thrash scored 18 points and Shaquetta Rhodes added 10 for UAB. Ashlee Orndorff scored 14, Katie Golomb 12 and Rachel Lewis 11 for Nevada.
