UAB Pounds Idaho in Consolation Match

Reno, Nev. - Deanna Jackson scored 33 points and pulled down 11 rebounds to lead UAB to a 90-70 win over Idaho in the consolation game of the Nevada Bell Classic in Reno, Nevada.
Jackson was nine-of-13 from the field and made 13-of-17 free throws. She also made 2-of-4 three-point shots and dished out three assists.
The Lady Blazers shot 57 percent from the field for the game and outrebounded Idaho 39-28. They held Idaho to just 38.5 percent shooting for the game.
Freshman forward Natasha Thomas added 18 points and nine rebounds. Brandi Stallings scored 12 points, hitting 4-of-6 from behind the arc.
UAB took control early and led 53-35 at the half. In that first half, the Lady Blazers held Idaho to just 31 percent shooting from the field. The Vandals made 1-0f-8 from 3-point range in the first half. UAB shot 52 percent from the field in the first period.
Like Friday night, however, the Lady Blazers struggled some early in the second half, allowing Idaho to cut the lead to 60-50. UAB went on a13-0 run to push the lead up to. In that span Stallings hit two of her treys and Thomas added another long shot. UAB finished the second half, shooting 67 percent from the field and hitting 5-of-6 from three-point range.
Kelly Benad led Idaho with 15 points. Tasha Rico scored 13 and Darci Pemberton added 11.
In a foul-marred game, the Lady Blazers made 26-of-39 free throws and Idaho made 29-of-37. Three Vandal players fouled out, as did UAB freshman point guard Vanessa White.
UAB returns home to host Kansas in the first round of the Lady Blazer Classic, Saturday afternoon, Nov. 25 at 6 p.m. Tennessee-Martin and UL-Monroe play in the first game at 2:30. It is part of a triple-header with the men hosting LaSalle at 8:30 p.m.
