Ryan Freeburg joined the UAB volleyball staff in August 2020 and enters his seventh season as the Blazers’ associate head coach in 2026. During his time at UAB, Freeburg has helped the Blazers reach postseason play in four seasons while coaching nine All-Conference performers across Conference USA and the American Athletic Conference.
Freeburg came to UAB following one season at Samford in 2019, where he helped guide the Bulldogs to the Southern Conference regular-season and tournament championships and an NCAA Tournament berth. During his lone season in Birmingham, he coached 2019 SoCon Player of the Year and AVCA All-Region honorable mention selection Kelsi Hobbs.
Prior to Samford, Freeburg spent five seasons at Alabama from 2014-18, working primarily with the Crimson Tide’s passing, blocking and defensive units. He served as Alabama’s interim head coach for the final five matches of the 2018 season.
Freeburg joined Alabama after spending the 2013 season as an assistant coach at Dayton. He worked with the Flyers’ setters and middle blockers while serving as the team’s defensive coordinator. During his time at Dayton, the Flyers averaged 3.00 blocks per set, ranking third nationally.
From 2011-12, Freeburg served as an assistant coach at George Washington, where he worked with the Colonials’ serve-receive, blocking and outside hitters.
Freeburg began his collegiate coaching career at Purdue, where he spent three years as a student manager before serving as a volunteer assistant coach during the 2010 season. That season, he helped the Boilermakers advance to the NCAA Elite Eight while earning victories over No. 1 Florida, No. 4 Penn State and No. 10 Illinois.
In addition to his collegiate coaching experience, Freeburg founded the Lafayette Volleyball Academy in Lafayette, Indiana, and worked with the Munciana Volleyball Club in Muncie, Indiana.
