UAB Director of Athletics Mark Ingram appointed Matt Whall as the new head coach of the Blazer men’s golf team on July 14, 2021.
Whall becomes the ninth head coach in program history, and just the fifth since the 1989-90 season. He inherits a rich tradition of success as the Blazers are coming off their eighth NCAA National Championship appearance in 2021 where they finished 24th overall.
Whall joins UAB after spending the previous four seasons as the Florida State assistant for both the Seminoles men’s and women’s programs. This past season, the FSU men tied for fifth nationally while the women were 10th.
“Our staff and team are excited to welcome Matt Whall as our next head coach,” Ingram said. “Matt has a steady and thoughtful approach to his work, which stood out to our search committee. We have a proud history in Men’s Golf, and Matt’s vision and experience will allow us to take the next steps towards future success.”
A native of Lincolnshire, England, Whall was responsible for recruiting and developing John Pak, the No. 1 ranked golfer in the country and the recipient of the 2021 Jack Nicklaus Award, Ben Hogan Award and Fred Haskins Award. Pak graduated with the lowest stroke average in Florida State history.
Along with guiding Pak to the nation’s top honors on the men’s side, Whall also coached the 2021 ACC Female Golfer of the Year and First Team All-American Beatrice Wallin. Wallin enters her senior year with the second lowest stroke average in school history.
"I am extremely excited for the opportunity to lead the UAB Men's Golf team,” Whall said. “I am joining at a great time in the program with the challenge to continue the success that Coach Wilson and these young men have achieved in recent seasons.
“I want to thank Mark Ingram, Matt Wildt, Dan Carlson and the rest of the search committee who have given me such a great honor to lead this program and I can ensure the Blazer fanbase that I will work tirelessly to push this team to new heights. We have a core of extremely talented young men, an incredible golf environment in Birmingham and an innovative and dynamic athletic department that gives us the platform to create something special."
Prior to Florida State, Whall spent three seasons as the assistant coach for the Texas Tech women’s team. Whall helped the Red Raiders reach the NCAA National Championship two of the three years he was there, after a 20 year wait for the program at NCAAs. In 2015, Texas Tech finished tied for fifth at NCAA Nationals, and Whall also coached the Big 12 Player of the Year in 2016.
Whall was the head teaching professional at Coxmoor Golf Club in England from 2003-2014, while he was also the England Golf Regional U16 Girls Coach from 2013-14. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Sports Coaching from Loughborough University in June of 2014.
Whall and his wife, Jenny, have one son, Noah, and daughter Ava Paige.
