A well-respected coach at the college and NFL level for almost 50 years, Rip Scherer was named UAB’s Senior Advisor to the Head Coach in January of 2023. Scherer will work directly with Trent Dilfer in all aspects of managing and developing the UAB football team.
Scherer has a diverse football background, which includes stops as the head coach at James Madison (1991-94) and Memphis (1995-2000), along with serving as the offensive coordinator at Georgia Tech (1980-86), Alabama (1987), Arizona (1988-90), Kansas (2001) and Southern Miss (2003-04).
Scherer also spent over a decade as a position coach in the NFL. From 2005-08, he was the Assistant Head Coach/Quarterbacks for the Cleveland Browns, followed by coaching quarterbacks for the Carolina Panthers (2009-10) and tight ends for the Los Angeles Chargers from 2018-2020.
Along with coaching, Scherer also has experience as an administrator as the Associate Athletic Director for Football at UCLA from 2013-15.
