Miguel Patrick was named UAB’s defensive line coach in December of 2022 and is in his second season with the Blazers.
In 2023, Patrick’s unit helped the Blazers compile 27 sacks and 49 TFL. Additionally, UAB ranked 7th nationally in fumbles recovered (11) and had 21 total takeaways.
On the edge, Patrick helped Desmond Little lead the team in sacks (5.5) and TFL (7.5), while on the interior line, Kevin Penn led the unit with 43 tackles, 4.0 sacks and 4.5 TFL. Both Little and Penn return for their senior seasons in 2024.
Additionally, Patrick developed a cast of true freshmen on the defensive line in 2023 as five rookies in Jonathan Allen, Miquon Merriweather, Eamon Smalls, Tyler Thomas and Emmanuel Waller all played an extensive role, led by Merriweather and Waller who appeared in 10 and nine games, respectively.
Patrick joined UAB after spending the 2022 season at Ohio State as a defensive quality control coach. Patrick helped the Buckeyes reach the College Football Playoff Semifinal and finish with a top 15 national ranking in total defense.
Before coaching college, Patrick was a well-respected high school coach in Georgia. Patrick led Ellenwood Cedar Grove to a state championship in his first season as a head coach in 2019. He also helped Cedar Grove win state 3-A championships in 2016 and 2018 as the defensive coordinator.
After compiling a 17-7 record at Cedar Grove in two seasons, Patrick was named the head coach at Cordele (Ga.) Crisp County in 2021. He led the Cougars to a 9-4 record, a region championship and a trip to the state quarterfinals that season.
Patrick played linebacker at Alabama State and graduated in 2006 with a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. He went on to earn his Master’s from Kennesaw State in Educational Leadership in 2018.
Patrick has three children, Zari Ingram, Khali Patrick and Mason Patrick.
