BIRMINGHAM – UAB women's soccer (4-5-1, 1-1-0 American) second-half goal and a strong defensive performance lifted the Blazers to a 1-0 victory over Florida Atlantic (3-4-4, 1-1-0 American) on Thursday night at PNC Field for the first conference win of the season.

UAB controlled much of the match, outshooting Florida Atlantic 13-6 while putting 10 attempts on frame compared to just one for the Owls.

UAB applied pressure throughout the opening 45 minutes, recording eight shots and forcing Florida Atlantic goalkeeper Lily Holden into five saves. Maia Sirota, Lauren Lucero, Mia Leath and Vita Naihin each put attempts on target during the first half, but the teams entered the break scoreless.

The Blazers continued to create chances after halftime. Leath forced another save less than two minutes into the second half before Ava Metts, Lailah Stewart and Avery Berryman each tested Holden.

UAB finally broke through in the 70^th minute. Caitlin Keeling set up Berryman, who found the back of the net at the 69:54 mark to give the Blazers a 1-0 advantage. The goal was Berryman's fourth of the season.

The Green and Gold defense took care of the rest, holding Florida Atlantic without a shot over the final 29 minutes. Goalkeeper Macie Murphy made the Owls' lone shot-on-goal save in the 61^st minute and finished with one save to secure the clean sheet.

UAB finished with advantages in shots (13-6), shots on goal (10-1), corner kicks (7-3) and possession (55-45 percent). Berryman and Leath led the Blazers with three shots apiece, while Leath put all three of her attempts on frame.

Up next, UAB travels to East Carolina on Sunday, September 27. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m. CT.
