Shirah, Russell Named American Honorable Mentions

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - UAB Softball earned its first double weekly award of the season with Ashlyn Shirah and Caitlin Russell both being dubbed American Conference Honorable Mentions. Shirah's two grand slam weekend solidified her spot on the list, while Russell's win to close out the regular season notched her first honorable mention of the season.
Shirah's weekend was highlighted by her two grand slams, driving in eight of the Blazers' 11 runs for the weekend. Shirah hit .444 with four hits at Florida Atlantic. A walk brought Shirah's on-base percentage to .500 on the weekend. With 10 total bases, Shirah slugged 1.111 in Boca Raton. Shirah is the first Blazer to hit multiple grand slams in a season since at least 2018.
Russell pitched five great innings for the Blazers on Saturday, earning her seventh win of the season. Russell allowed just one earned run on three hits and three walks, while striking out three Owls. Florida Atlantic batters hit just .176 off of Russell.
Shirah, Russell, and the Blazers are off to Greenville, N.C. for the American Championships. The Blazers are set to face eighth-seeded Tulsa in the opening round of the tournament at 9 a.m. CT on Wednesday, May 6.
