BIRMINGHAM - UAB men's basketball head coach Andy Kennedy has announced the addition of transfer guard Justyn Fernandez from Delaware.
"Really excited to have Justyn join our program," said Andy Kennedy. "At 6'5", 215 pounds, Justyn has great positional size to go with a tremendous shooting stroke and high-level court awareness, which will allow him to come to Birmingham and have an immediate impact on Blazer Basketball."
The Richmond, Virginia native transfers in from Delaware, where he started all 28 games last season. He averaged 16.6 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 37.4 minutes per game. Fernandez recorded 10 games with 20 or more points, including a stretch of four consecutive performances from Feb. 4–14. He also ranked among the top 10 in Conference USA in free throw percentage, three-pointers per game, points per game, and field goal percentage.
Prior to his time at Delaware, Fernandez spent two seasons with Providence, appearing in 24 games and averaging 10 minutes per contest. He missed the 2023–24 season due to a leg injury. As a freshman in 2022–23 at George Mason, he played in 33 games with 13 starts, averaging 4.1 points in 13.9 minutes per game.
Coming out of high school, Fernandez was a consensus four-star prospect, ranked No. 74 in the class of 2022 by ESPN and No. 80 in the 247Sports Composite rankings. He originally chose George Mason over offers from Florida, Tennessee, NC State, Virginia Tech, Clemson, Wake Forest, Boston College, Providence, and Rhode Island.
Fernandez spent his first three high school seasons at Monacan High School and Virginia Episcopal School in the Richmond area before transferring to IMG Academy for his senior year.
He becomes the seventh addition to the UAB Blazers men's basketball 2026 signing class, joining high school prospects Jakobi Sharp and Korie Corbett, junior college transfers Tim Holliday and Shah Hall, and Division I transfers Jeremy Elyzee and Deuce Jones.
