UAB Throttles Memphis to Win Series

BIRMINGHAM – UAB Baseball (28-16, 12-6) took care of Memphis (16-26, 8-10) on Sunday afternoon by a score of 11-2. The Blazers tallied 10+ hits for the fifth time in the last six games.
There was no score in the game until the bottom of the third inning. Kevin Hall Jr. drew a 2-out walk and stood on first for John Paul Head. Head roped his ninth double of the season to score Hall all the way from first to put the Blazers on the board first. UAB is now 21-2 when scoring first.
That score would hold until the bottom of the fifth when the Green and Gold exploded for five runs. John Paul Head ripped his 16th home run of the season for a 3-run shot. Three batters later, Brady Waugh brought in Landon Beaver on a sac fly and then Wesley Helms scored Alex Dupuy to extend UAB's lead to 6-0.
Mason Steele recorded his first start in 16 days and put together a strong showing on Sunday. Steele struck out seven in four scoreless innings and allowed just one hit on his way to his fifth win of the season.
Memphis pushed single runs across in the sixth and seventh innings. Brady McAbee doubled home Javon Hernandez in the sixth and Freddy Rodriguez singled in Tyler Harrington in the seventh to cut UAB's lead to 6-2.
The Blazers' offense pushed across five more runs in the bottom half of the seventh before recording an out. Home runs by Landon Beaver and Andrew Hunt each hit their fifth home runs of the season to inflate the Green and Gold's lead to 11-2.
Brendan Conner shut out the Memphis offense over the last two innings as the Blazers clinched their first winning season since 2022.
NOTES
- Sunday was the 16th time this season the Blazers have scored 10+ runs.
- UAB has homered 62 times this season. Only four other teams in UAB history have hit 60+ home runs in a single season.
- John Paul Head tied his career high with three hits, an instance he has accomplished five other times. Head also registered a 4-RBI game which puts him in fourth in The American with 45 on the season.
- Landon Beaver picked up his fifth 3-hit game of his career. Beaver finished the week 9-for-17 with five runs scored, three doubles, and a home run.
- Wesley Helms and Brady Waugh each recorded their 14th multi-hit games of the season on Sunday.
- Mason Steele (2nd) and Brendan Conner (9th) tossed scoreless outings in Sunday's win.
With no midweek matchup, UAB's next game will come on Friday as the Blazers head to Houston to take on Rice. First pitch from Reckling Park is set for 6:35 p.m. on ESPN+.
