Blazers Upset No.18 Washington on Day One of Tiger Beach Challenge

BATON ROUGE, La.Β - The UAB beach volleyball teamΒ defeated No.18Β WashingtonΒ 3-2Β on the opening day of the Tiger Beach Challenge on Friday. The BlazersΒ (4-3)Β secured their first win over a rankedΒ opponentΒ since a 4-1Β victoryΒ againstΒ No. 20 Georgia State in 2025.Β It was also the program's highest ranked win sinceΒ 2023.Β Β
UAB set the toneΒ on Court 1 with a decisive 2-0 victory from Jasmine Haas and Olivia StantΒ over the Huskies' (3-2)Β KatrinaΒ PantoricΒ and Niki Egan. With the win,Β Haas and Stant moved into soleΒ possessionΒ of third placeΒ in program history for career wins as a duoΒ withΒ 30.Β Haas alsoΒ recordedΒ her 71stΒ careerΒ victory,Β settingΒ the program's all-timeΒ individual winsΒ record.Β Β
The BlazersΒ addedΒ a hard-fought 2-1 victory on Court 5 winΒ as Olivia ChychrunΒ and Ava Grace Knott defeatedΒ Alina Urzua and Avery Towne in three sets. TheΒ dualΒ was decided on Court 3,Β whereΒ Lauren Cairo and Claudia Stockard outlasted Mayamay Brown and ZoeΒ PadarcusΒ 2-1.Β Β
In the nightcap against ULMΒ (1-5),Β the BlazersΒ delivered aΒ dominantΒ performance,Β sweepingΒ the Warhawks 5-0.Β UABΒ dropped justΒ twoΒ setsΒ across allΒ five courts,Β earning victories on each.Β This includedΒ straight-set winsΒ on Court 2,Β 3 and 4.Β Β
The BlazersΒ return toΒ action Saturday at 10:30 a.m. in their first Conference USAΒ matchupΒ of theΒ seasonΒ against TulaneΒ (4-3). UABΒ closesΒ the tournament at 2:15 p.m. against Houston Christian (1-5).Β Β
