Blazers set for first full season under head coach Alex Mortensen
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – UAB announced its 2026 football schedule on Thursday, setting the stage for a new chapter of UAB football. Alex Mortensen is set to lead the Blazers through a balanced 12-game slate including eight bowl teams from a season ago, three of which will visit Protective Stadium.
UAB opens the season on the road against Big Ten opponent Illinois on Sept. 5, before returning to Birmingham for its home opener against ULM on Sept. 12. The non-conference schedule also includes a regional matchup at Louisiana and a cross-town contest against Samford.
Conference play in the American features a challenging home slate at Protective Stadium, highlighted by matchups against three bowl-winning teams from a year ago in Navy, East Carolina and UTSA. The Blazers will also host Charlotte, while traveling to face Memphis, South Florida, Temple and American runner-up North Texas during league play.
"This is a strong schedule from top to bottom. Our non-conference games will challenge us early, and the American continues to be one of the most competitive leagues in the country," Alex Mortensen said. "We're excited about the opportunity to compete every week and continue building our program."
