Blazers set for first full season under head coach Alex Mortensen
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. βΒ UAB announced its 2026Β football schedule onΒ Thursday,Β setting the stage forΒ a new chapter of UAB football.Β Alex MortensenΒ is set to lead the Blazers throughΒ a balanced 12-game slateΒ includingΒ eight bowl teamsΒ fromΒ aΒ season ago,Β threeΒ ofΒ whichΒ willΒ visitΒ ProtectiveΒ Stadium.Β Β
UAB opens the season on the road against Big Ten opponent Illinois onΒ Sept.Β 5,Β before returning to Birmingham for its home opener against ULM on Sept. 12. The non-conference schedule also includes a regional matchup at Louisiana andΒ aΒ cross-townΒ contest against Samford.Β Β
Conference play in the American featuresΒ a challenging home slateΒ at Protective Stadium, highlighted byΒ matchups against three bowl-winning teams from a year agoΒ in Navy, EastΒ CarolinaΒ and UTSA.Β The Blazers will also hostΒ Charlotte, while traveling toΒ face Memphis,Β South Florida,Β TempleΒ andΒ AmericanΒ runner-upΒ NorthΒ TexasΒ during league play.Β Β
"This is a strong schedule from top to bottom. Our non-conference games will challenge us early, and the American continues to be one of the most competitive leagues in the country," Alex Mortensen said. "We're excited about the opportunity to compete every week and continue building our program."Β
