UAB Takes Midweek Contest Over Alabama State

BIRMINGHAM – UAB Baseball (5-4) went back to its winning ways on Tuesday as the Blazers handled business against Alabama State, 10-5. UAB advances to 24-0 all-time against Alabama State in Birmingham.

UAB is now 4-0 when it scores first and Andrew Hunt got the scoring started in the bottom half of the first when he doubled home Alex Dupuy and Landon Beaver to put the Blazers up, 2-0.

Alabama State answered back with one run in the top of the second inning. Trey Callaway hit a solo home run to left center to cut the UAB lead to 2-1.

The Hornets tied the game in the top of the fourth on a Jose Alfonso RBI double which scored Jackson Williams. The next batter, Trey Calloway ripped his second home run of the afternoon to put ASU up, 4-2. It is the third time this season a single player has hit two home runs against UAB.

UAB would power into the lead in the bottom half of the fourth with four of its own. Alex Dupuy scorched a line drive off the third baseman's glove and into left field which scored Baylor Roberts to cut the deficit to one. The next batter was John Paul Head who sent an opposite field blast to right field for a 3-run home run to catapult the Blazers into the lead, 6-4.

Neither side would score again until the Blazers scored their fifth unanswered run in the bottom of the sixth. Brady Waugh took advantage of a wild pitch to add to the UAB advantage.

ASU would get a run back in the top of the seventh on a Miguel Oropeza sac fly bringing home Aden Malpass to cut into the Blazer lead.

The Green and Gold would get their third inning with a crooked number in the bottom half of the seventh. Landon Beaver's single through the right side scored Kevin Hall Jr. from second, moving John Paul Head to third and Beaver advanced on the throw. The next batter, Andrew Hunt dropped a single into center field which allowed Head and Beaver to both score and would put the Blazers up, 10-5.

UAB's Brendan Conner pitched the final 5.1 innings of the game in relief. Conner struck out five, allowed three hits, allowed just one run, and faced only 19 batters en route to his first win of the season and the second of his career.

NOTES
- UAB moves to 24-0 all-time against Alabama State in Birmingham and 34-5 overall.

- Kevin Hall Jr. recorded his team-high fifth multi-hit game this season. Hall has eight hits in his last four games.

- Andrew Hunt notched his third multi-hit game this season and sits behind Hall for the most on the team.

- Hunt also led the club with four RBI which is his UAB career-high.

- John Paul Head tallied his season-best with three RBI which also ties his career-high.

- UAB drew a season-high 13 walks which matches the total from last year's matchup with the Hornets.

UAB wraps up its 8-game homestand this weekend as the Blazers host Jacksonville for three games. This weekend marks the first matchup between the Blazers and Dolphins since 1991 when the schools were Sun Belt rivals.
