HOOVER, Ala. – The UAB volleyball team rallied from a set down to defeat Memphis in four sets on Friday afternoon at Hoover High School.
UAB jumped out to an early 6-3 lead in the opening set, but Memphis battled back to take its first lead at 9-8. A 4-0 Tiger run gave the visitors an 18-14 advantage, and Memphis held on to take the first set, 25-22.
Trailing 1-0, the Blazers responded in a tightly contested second set. After the teams traded points early, Memphis used an 8-0 run to build a 14-7 lead. UAB chipped away at the deficit, eventually tying the set at 21-21. Facing set point twice, the Blazers answered both times before an attack error, a Juliet Galla service ace and a Mia Reese kill secured a 27-25 win to even the match.
The Blazers took control midway through the third set. Leading 12-9, UAB rattled off five consecutive points to extend its advantage and carried the momentum through the remainder of the frame, closing out a 25-17 victory to take a 2-1 lead.
UAB dominated the fourth set, jumping out to a 7-2 advantage. Memphis pulled within four points on multiple occasions, but the Blazers responded with a 7-1 run to build a double-digit lead at 19-9. Reese's 20th kill of the match capped the 25-13 set victory and secured the 3-1 win for UAB.
Reese led the Blazers with 20 kills while hitting .350. Kennedy Vaughn added 14 kills and three service aces, while Makayla Meister contributed nine kills and five blocks. Rachel McCollum paced the offense with a season-high 44 assists, the most by a UAB player since Nov. 15, 2024. Delaney Bowser led the defensive effort with 17 digs.
