UAB Outlasts South Florida in Double Overtime

TAMPA, FLORIDA - The UAB Men's Basketball team (10-5, 1-1 American) beat South Florida (8-6 0-1 American) in overtime 109-106 on Sunday afternoon. Chance Westry led the team with 24 points on 8-of-12 shooting. Jacob Meyer (19), Daniel Rivera (18), Quaran McPherson (17), Ahmad Robinson (11), and KyeRon Lindsay-Martin (11) all scored in double figures.
South Florida was led by 36 points from Wes Enis who made ten threes on the day. Izaiyah Nelson added 23 points on 8-of-14 shooting.

- South Florida saw 10 players hit the floor in the first half.
- Quaran McPherson was 3-for-3 from the field in the first half. He played just 12 minutes and led the Blazers with nine first-half points.
- Wes Enis (13) and Izaiyah Nelson (11) both scored in double figures in the first half for South Florida.
- UAB erased an 11-point deficit, the second-largest comeback of the season by the Blazers (12 vs Troy). It marks the largest comeback victory of the season, and the largest since a 17-point comeback win at Santa Clara on March 23, 2025.
- UAB was out rebounded 49-61 for the second game in a row. It marks the first time UAB has been outrebounded in back-to-back games this season.
- UAB allowed 13 threes, tied for the second most this season.
- Evan Chatman is the first UAB player to foul out since Nov. 21 against South Alabama. Rivera and Lindsay-Martin also fouled out.
- Jacob Meyer recorded his first double-double as a blazer with 19 points and a career-high 11 rebounds.
- Meyer's 19 points are his most since Nov. 25 against UTEP (25).
- Chance Westry took 13 shots from the charity stripe, the most attempts of his career.
- This was the first overtime game of the season. The last overtime game came on March 26, 2025 and the last double overtime game came on March 4, 2023 against Charlotte.
- UAB's 31 made free throws and 43 attempted free throws are both season-high marks.
- UAB shot 44% from the field (36-for-82), 40% from three (6-for-15), and 72% from the free-throw line (31-for-43).
- Both teams missed their first three shots, with the first bucket coming on a Daniel Rivera layup at the 18:02 mark (2-0).
- South Florida started the game on a 12-5 run after hitting two three-point shots in the first five minutes (5-12).
- UAB concluded a 9-3 run after an Evan Chatman tough layup (14-15).
- UAB took its first lead since it was 2-0 with a pair of Jacob Meyer free throws (16-15).
- USF went on a 3:22 scoring drought in the middle of the first half ending on an Izaiyah Nelson dunk.
- Back-to-back three-points shots by Quaran McPherson gave UAB a two-point lead (30-28).
- An alley-oop by Nelson put the Bulls ahead by one with 2:21 to play in the half (35-34).
- UAB ended the half with a big defensive stop holding the Bulls to 27% from behind the arc (35-38).

- The Bulls got out to a 10-point lead twice early in the second half including at the 14:40 mark (47-57).

- Rivera made it a three-point game with 1:38 to go in the game (78-81).
- Rivera made both free throws after getting fouled with 3.6 seconds left (83-83). That sent the game to overtime.
- In overtime, Jacob Meyer started the Blazers off with a three-point shot (86-83).
- The two teams traded baskets until the 2:18 mark when the Bulls took a 90-88 lead.
- USF's Nelson got fouled and made the basket with 1:15 to go in the overtime period to take a 92-91 lead.
- Quaran McPherson hit a clutch jumper to tie the game at 95 and send it to a second overtime.
- Ahmad Robinson hit a step back three to tie the game at 98 and that kick started a 9-0 run in double overtime (104-98).
- After USF got to within two points, Chance Westry went straight to the basket to extend the UAB lead to four with less than a minute left (107-103).
- Three straight points from South Florida put them within one with 11 seconds to go (107-106).
- Jacob Meyer threw down a huge dunk with four seconds to go, and USF did not even get a shot off to tie the game (109-106).
- Final score: UAB 109, South Florida 106
- UAB is back at home on Wednesday, Jan. 7 to host Florida Atlantic. Tippoff is set for 6:30 p.m. CT
