YOUNGSVILLE, La. – The UAB beach volleyball team looks to win its first Conference USA Championship this weekend and opens postseason play on Thursday against UTEP at 1 p.m. CT in Youngsville, Louisiana.
The Blazers (19-10) earned the 4-seed in the CUSA Tournament and face off against the Miners (11-15) who earned the 5-seed. The two teams have met once already this season with UAB defeating UTEP 4-1 in a very closely contested match which saw every court go three sets.
The winner of this match will play at 10 a.m. on Friday in the winner's bracket against top-seeded Florida Atlantic, while the loser will fall to the contender's bracket in the double-elimination formatted tournament.
UAB is one win away from notching its first 20-win season in school history and looks to reach the NCAA Tournament for the first time ever by winning the CUSA Tournament.
Leading the way is UAB's record-setting Court 1 pair of Jasmine Haas and Olivia Stant who enter the postseason with an overall record of 24-5. All of their matches have come on the top court and they have set the single season school records for most overall wins, most Court 1 wins and most single season wins by a pair.
Additionally, grad transfer Klea Sirois also boasts a record of 24-5 and has been tremendous for the Blazers by notching 12 wins on Court 3 and 12 wins on Court 4. She paired with Lauren Cairo midway through the season and the duo has a record of 15-2 together.
Sophomore Addison Atkins has been the anchor on Court 5 and is one win away from becoming the 10th player in school history to win 20 matches in a season, while freshman Claudia Stockard has 18 wins, which is tied for the second most by a rookie. Stockard has seen action on courts two, three and four and has settled into a new partnership with Olivia Chychrun on Court 4.
