BIRMINGHAM – UAB men's basketball head coach Andy Kennedy announced the signing of Brazilian center João Das Chagas on Tuesday morning.
"Excited to have 'JV' join our program." Kennedy said, "He is a big, physical post player who gives us a post presence from day one. JV is a great guy who has sacrificed a lot along his basketball journey to arrive at this stage."
The Brazilian big man began his career at Utah Valley where he redshirted before spending one season at Arizona Western and transferring to Indian Hills in Iowa for his final season in junior college.
This past season the 6'10" center averaged 6.1 points and 6.5 rebounds per game while shooting 54.4 percent from the field at Indian Hills. He scored a career high 25 points, grabbed 23 rebounds and blocked four shots in a win over Elgin late in the season. He finished with five double-doubles on the season while scoring in double figures in seven games. He was named ICCAC and NJCAA Player of the Week after averaging 18.0 points, 15.0 rebounds and 2.0 blocks per game.
Das Chagas earned NJCAA All-Region Honorable Mention honors following his sophomore season.
At Arizona Western, Das Chagas averaged 5.0 points and 5.0 rebounds while shooting 50 percent from the field while scoring in double figures in seven games.
Before redshirting for one season at Utah Valley, the Niquelândia, Brazil native attended the NBA Academy Latin America in San Luis Potosí, Mexico.
He joins Dayjaun Anderson, Evan Chatman and Ari Gooch as the Blazers' fourth JUCO signee of the cycle. The Blazers also have a pair of high school signees in Lance Carr and Salim London in addition to one transfer portal addition in Jacob Meyer.
