Blazers Walk-Off 22nd Ranked Auburn, 6-5

BIRMINGHAM - UAB Baseball (10-2) prevailed in a back-and-forth game against Auburn (11-2) on Wednesday night, 6-5. Wesley Helms capped off the dramatic win with a walk-off single in the bottom of the 9th to bring home Nick Hollifield.

The red-hot Tigers started quick with a leadoff home run on the second pitch of the game by Eric Snow. Cooper McMurray followed him with a two out home run to right field.

The Blazers answered right back in the bottom half of the 1st. The first four Blazers of the inning reached. Gavin Lewis Jr. reached on an infield single. After a Logan Braunschweig walk, Nick Hollifield singled up the middle and advanced on an error to drive home Lewis and put men on second and third with nobody out. Todd Clay punched a ball through the right side to bring home both Braunschweig and Hollifield to put the Green and Gold in front.

Braunschweig has now reached safely in an American Conference leading 40 consecutive games dating back to last season.

Braxton Shelton battled for the Blazers on the mound. The junior right-hander worked 5.1 innings and struck out four.

Auburn tied the game in the top of the 4th on another home run by McMurray.

UAB rallied again in the bottom of the 4th thanks to a bases-loaded RBI groundout by Braunschweig.

In the top of the 6th, Lucas Steele singled home Deric Fabian to tie the game once more.

Hollifield delivered a one out double off the wall in the bottom of the 7th. After he advanced on a wild pitch, Todd Clay delivered again with a roper to right field to put the Blazers back in front. Clay finished the game 3-4 with 3 RBI against his hometown team.

Lucas Steele responded with his second RBI base hit of the game with a double down the left field line to knot the game up again.

Hollifield started the rally in the Blazer half of the 9th with a single through the left side. Tyler Harrington put together a 10 pitch walk in a pinch-hit appearance. With two strikes, two on and two out, Wesley Helms delivered with a single to left center to send the Blazers home victorious.

UAB hits the road on Friday as it travels to Greenville, South Carolina for the First Pitch Invitational at Fluor Field. First pitch against Michigan State is slated for 2 p.m. ET on ESPN+.
