Women’s Basketball Set to Compete in 2025 Cancun Challenge
2/5/2025 11:03:00 AM | Women's Basketball
BIRMINGHAM – UAB women's basketball is slated to compete in the Cancun Challenge on November 27-29, tournament officials announced on Wednesday.
"Competing in a high-level tournament like the Cancun Challenge gives our team an incredible opportunity to grow on and off the court," head coach Randy Norton said. "Facing strong competition early in the season, in a tournament style format, in a unique environment challenges our players to adapt, compete, and build chemistry early in the season. Beyond basketball, the experience of traveling together strengthens our team chemistry and provides lifelong memories. These tournaments prepare us for the challenges ahead and help us take our program to the next level, while also preparing for conference play."
The Cancun Challenge will span the Thanksgiving weekend and will take place at the all-inclusive Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya. The Blazers were selected to compete in the Yucatan Division which includes four other teams.
NC State, Purdue, San Francisco and TCU will join UAB in the Yucatan Division. Each of the five teams will play two games over three days.
"We are excited to come back to the Cancun Challenge," Norton said. "It was a great experience the last time we came and wanted to come back. They do a great job of organizing the tournament and are easy to work with."
UAB competed in the Cancun Challenge during the 2015-16 season under Norton, where the Blazers claimed a 56-46 win against High Point.
Matchups for the Yucatan Division will be announced in the coming months on the Cancun Challenge website.
