BIRMINGHAM – The UAB Softball team (8-5) beat Belmont (9-6) in shutout fashion. The Blazers also dropped an eight inning game to Big Ten opponent Purdue (9-6).
GAME 1 VS PURDUE
The last time UAB got a win against a Big Ten opponent was back in 2016 when the Blazers beat Wisconsin twice. Purdue did just a little bit more to secure the 9-5 after eight innings. UAB pitcher Caroline McLendon started and pitched a complete game against the Boilermakers.
A flurry of runs came in the second and third inning for both teams. UAB answered every run that Purdue put on the board, scoring in the second, third, and fifth. Kaily Collett made her first start of the season and started off with a home run in the second inning. That tied the score at two after two innings.
Purdue put up two more runs before Ashlyn Shirah drove in two runs in the third. The game was once again tied at three. In the fifth inning Jordyn Ramos hit a home run to regain the lead for Purdue. The Blazers answered again in the fifth on a dropped third strike that scored Hope Tucker.
UAB ran out of gas in the 8th when Purdue scored five eighth inning runs and UAB could not comeback. Final score: 9-4.
GAME 2 vs BELMONT
UAB got their second crack at the Belmont Bruins on day three of the Green and Gold Classic. The Blazers got revenge winning the game 6-0 allowing just two hits.
It all started in the bottom of the first inning when Alyssa Aguilar hit a sacrifice fly to score the speedy Bella Wiggins. UAB scored the majority of their runs in the third inning to lead 5-1 at the end of three. Ashlyn Shirah drove in another run on the day, scoring Wiggins. Collett singled and Wortham doubled to score two more runs, while Droddy hit an RBI groundout. The last scoring for the game was a Wiggins double to score Hannah Dorssett.
Freshman Tait Davidson pitched six innings allowing just two hits and striking out two. She retired 14 of the 18 batters faces this afternoon.
