CHARLESTON - Two different styles of games resulted in two wins for UAB Baseball on Saturday at Shipyard Park in Charleston.
GAME 1
The Blazers (1-1) opened the day facing off against Mercyhurst (0-2) where the UAB offense exploded for 20 runs. UAB had 11 different hitters record a hit and 12 different players scored a run. Gavin Lewis Jr., Logan Braunschweig, Tyler Waugh, Braxton Brooks, and Landon Beaver all picked up multiple hits. Lewis, Braunschweig, Waugh, Brooks, Jax Yoxtheimer, Camden Hayslip, and Alex Cheeseman all recorded multiple runs. Braunschweig hit an inside the park home run in the 6th inning. This is the highest scoring output for the Blazer offense since Friday, February 26, 2021 against Alabama A&M when the Blazers scored 22 against the Bulldogs.
Chase Ingram earned the start on the mound for the Blazers. The junior struck out six across 4.1 innings and allowed only one walk. Isaac Warrick earned the win in his first outing since going down with Tommy John surgery last season. Brendan Conner recorded the save after going the final three innings for the Blazers while striking out three and giving up one run.
GAME 2
The Towson Tigers (0-2) stood in the way of the Blazers going 2-0 on the day. In a game where seven different players recorded an RBI, UAB (2-1) got immediate production early in the game from Todd Clay, Andrew Hunt, and Mayes White who all recorded RBI base hits.
Towson got on the board by way of a home run by Michael Mallas. Both offenses were held scoreless through the middle innings. Towson added another run off an RBI double by MJ Phillips.
UAB added some insurance thanks to a four-run 8th inning. Nick Hollifield, Camden Hayslip, Wesley Helms, and Tyler Waugh all contributed RBI base hits in the inning.
The 9th inning was shaky for the Blazers. After a wild pitch and a two-run home run to right, Towson cut the lead to 7-5. The Tigers cut the lead to one thanks to an RBI single by Brett Ahalt.
With the bases loaded, Gavin Lewis Jr. made an over the shoulder catch in shallow left center to clinch the game for the Blazers.
Preseason AAC Pitcher of the Year Colin Daniel made the start for UAB. The junior right-hander picked up where he left off last season and threw seven innings and allowed just two runs. Brock Hill picked up his first save of the season closing the book on a successful day for the Blazers.
UAB is back in action tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. ET/8 a.m. CT at Shipyard Park as it plays Ball State (2-1) to wrap up action on the weekend for the Swig & Swine College Classic.
