BIRMINGHAM - The UAB Cross Country team travels to John Hunt Cross Country Park in Huntsville on Friday, September 13 to compete in the JSU Southern Showcase. This year's women's 5K race will start at 10 a.m. and will feature 55 teams, as eight of which come from Power 4 conferences.
"Tomorrow will be a good test for us, there will be a few conference teams and a lot of our region there to compete against," said head coach Travis Pope. "We have had some great weeks of training and this will be our first meet racing our full team. Our goal is to go out and surprise some folks."
The Blazers are looking to build on last year's performance, where they finished 14th out of 37 teams. Looking to lead the charge once again will be Katie Keur, who last year crossed the finish line 47th overall with a time of 17:52. Keur and Lidia Longo will be making their season debuts on Friday. Kyra Hayes and Lia Castillo, who finished 85th and 91st last year respectively, both look to continue to show strong performances this weekend.
In their season opener at the JSU Foothills Invitational on August 30, Castillo and Hayes continued where they left off last season with impressive finishes. Castillo took 11th place, while Hayes secured 12th, both clocking times of 18:57 and 18:59 respectively. That duo, along with Keur and Longo, will be key as the Blazers aim for another impressive team finish.
Also returning this year are Anna Behmer and Ava Brooks, who contributed solid performances last season, along with Sangie Lincoln-Velez.
Xpress Timing will be timing the meet.
