Dilfer Names McCants as Offensive Line Coach

BIRMINGHAM β Head Coach Trent Dilfer has announced the promotion of Blazer alum Matt McCants as the new offensive line coach for the UAB football program.

McCants, who played offensive line for the Blazers and was selected in the 2012 NFL Draft, has been with the program since 2021 and this is his first season as an on-field coach.

"I am so honored to announce one of the all-time great Blazers, Matt McCants, as our new offensive line coach." Dilfer said, "As the leader of this program it is my responsibility to surround our student athletes with great men, great coaches and great recruiters - Matt is all three.Β If our players develop into the type of men and football players that Coach McCants did while at UAB and in the NFL, then we are all winning on and off the field!"

McCants rejoined the Green and Gold as a volunteer assistant coach in 2021, and then served as a strength and conditioning coach in 2022. Last season, McCants was the Director of Character Development.

A two-time First Team All-Conference USA offensive lineman, McCants was drafted by the New York Giants in 2012 and played seven years in the NFL with four different organizations (Giants, Raiders, Bears, Browns).

In 2019, McCants was a member of the AAF's Birmingham Iron and then was on the XFL's St. Louis Battlehawks in 2020 before COVID-19 shut down the league.

McCants graduated from UAB in 2011 with a criminal justice degree and a minor in theatre. He and his wife Alowe have one son, Sam.
