BIRMINGHAM – Despite numerous teams losing their major contributors to the transfer portal, UAB men's basketball was able swim against the current. The Blazers are set to return four of their six leading scorers off its AAC Tournament championship team, including Defensive Player of the Year and First Team All-AAC selection Yaxel Lendeborg.
Lendeborg led the Blazers in both scoring and rebounding with 13.8 points and 10.6 rebounds per game. During conference play, the AAC Tournament MVP reached another level, averaging 16.0 points and 11.8 boards over 18 games.
In the backcourt, the Blazers are bringing Efrem "Butta" Johnson, Alejandro Vasquez and Tony Toney. Johnson and Vasquez each averaged over 11 points per game last season and made 97 of the team's three-point field goals. Vasquez notably scored a career high 29 points in the conference title win over Temple.
Alongside Lendeborg, UAB will bring back high-flying Christian Coleman and Will Shaver. Coleman became a key part of the Blazers' run in the AAC Tournament, scoring in double figures in six straight games, including a 16-point, 10-rebound double-double against SMU. He finished the year shooting .546 from the field, the second-highest mark on the roster.
Of the Blazers' top six scorers in 2023-24, the only departures from the roster are Javian Davis to graduation and Eric Gaines who is pursuing professional opportunities.
In the AAC, UAB is one of only three teams that is projected to return an all-conference player, as Yaxel Lendeborg returns to UAB along with RJ Felton of ECU and David Jones of Memphis, who is testing the NBA draft waters.
Along with the returning production, UAB has added value in the transfer portal this offseason, bringing in Bradley Ezewiro (12.0 ppg, Saint Louis), Greg Gordon (16.0 ppg, Iona), and Tyren Moore (17.0 ppg, Georgia Southern). The Blazers also added the No. 3 JUCO player in the nation in Jaborri McGhee and prep wing Makhi Myles.
