BIRMINGHAM – The UAB beach volleyball team will play its final two matches of the regular season this Saturday, April 20, against No. 4 Cal Poly and Tulane at the NOLA Classic in New Orleans.
Having won four of its last five matches, UAB is currently 17-12 overall and looks to sustain momentum heading into next week's Conference USA Tournament.
It will be a challenging weekend for the Blazers as Cal Poly is the nation's fourth ranked team and enters the contest at 23-5 overall and most recently defeated No. 5 TCU 4-1. The Mustangs are coached by former Olympian Todd Rogers.
The match against Tulane could potentially be a preview of next week's CUSA Tournament in Youngsville, Louisiana. Tulane is 20-10 overall and is the second team receiving votes in the AVCA Top 20 national rankings. Saturday's match against the Green Wave will directly impact the seedings for the CUSA Tournament next week.
With two more wins on Court 1 last Tuesday in Florence, Arden Copping and Jasmine Haas improved their overall record to 20-8 this season and have played every match on the top court. The duo is one win away from setting the single season school record for most wins by a pair, while Haas is also one win away from becoming the winningest Court 1 player in school history.
Only a sophomore, Haas has tallied back-to-back 20-win seasons to start her career. Following a 20-14 record as a freshman, including a record of 14-10 on Court 1, Haas has matched her wins total from last year as she and Copping are having a record-breaking season for the Blazers. Haas is currently tied with Rachel Tam (2021-22) for most Court 1 wins in school history (34).
Court 2 for the Blazers have also been a consistent force as Jessica Ennis and Isabel Day have played every match together this season at that position and have tallied 16 wins. Ennis has the third most victories in school history (54), while Day's 16 wins currently rank her fifth for most wins by a freshman, and one more victory will move her into a tie for second place in school history.
Following the matches in New Orleans, UAB will learn its seed for the CUSA Tournament on Sunday night, and the tournament is scheduled to begin on Thursday, April 25.
