Blazers Travel to Face Southern Miss in WNIT Opener

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The UAB women's basketball team begins its postseason with a first-round matchup at Southern Miss in the 2024 WNIT Wednesday night, with tip set for 6 p.m. CT on ESPN+ at Reed Green Coliseum.
The Blazers are making its first appearance in the WNIT since 2019, when they reached the second round. It marks the fifth all-time appearance in the WNIT and the third under head coach Randy Norton.
Wednesday's matchup will be the 67th time UAB and Southern Miss have met. The Golden Eagles earned a 67-57 win over the Blazers in the last matchup on March 3, 2022.
UAB is 18-13 on the season and 9-9 in the American. The Blazers suffered a 71-56 defeat to Rice in the second round of the AAC Tournament on March 10. With two more wins, UAB would secure its 11th 20-win season and fourth under Norton.
The Blazers had two players named to the 2024 AAC All-Conference Third Team in Denim DeShields and Mia Moore. Moore also earned a spot on the All-Newcomer Team.
Moore leads the team with 15.5 points per game and 8.9 rebounds per game. She also ranks fourth in the conference in rebounds. DeShields is averaging 13.2 points and 5.4 assists per game, with her 5.4 assists ranking first in the conference.
Southern Miss enters the WNIT with a record of 18-13 overall and 10-8 in the Sun Belt. USM advanced to the third round of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament and fell 77-49 to No. 3 seed James Madison, who earned a No. 1 seed in the WBIT.
