Beach Volleyball Opens 2024 Season at GCU Tournament

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB beach volleyball team opens the 2024 season this Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 24-25, at the GCU Tournament in Phoenix, Ariz.
The Blazers begin the season against Arizona Christian University and Ottawa (Ariz.) on Saturday, followed by playing Boise State and No. 14 Grand Canyon on Sunday.
Under the direction of first year head coach Delaney Clesen, the Blazers enters the season with high expectations. UAB returns its top pair in First Team All-Conference USA players Arden Copping and Jasmine Haas, along with veteran blockers Jessica Ennis and Brooke Pertuit.
Haas is the reigning Conference USA Co-Freshman of the Year and was just named to the 2024 Preseason All-Conference USA Team. She posted 20 wins last season as a freshman, 14 of which came on Court 1 and 10 of which came with Copping.
Along with Ennis and Pertuit, sophomores Olivia Chychrun and Olivia Stant look to continue their momentum from last season in the back on UAB's lineup, while the 2024 UAB roster will feature five true freshmen this weekend in Arizona.
New faces which expect to contribute right away for the Blazers include Isabel Day, Madeline Sigmon, Ashley Torsone, Sadie Sharpe and Addison Atkins who made the trip to Phoenix this weekend.
The Blazers are coming off a 2023 season in which they sent a program record 18 wins and reached the Conference USA Tournament semifinals.
Following the GCU Tournament, the Blazers host the UAB Beach Classic next weekend, March 2-3, at the Blazer Beach Courts. UAB welcomes No. 11 Florida Atlantic, UTEP, UT Martin and EKU to Birmingham.
