Trailing 4-1, UAB scored one run in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to tie the game at 4-4. Lauren Brock's RBI double in the top of the seventh was the clutch hit that sent the game to extras.
With the bases loaded in the top of the 10th, Brock also had a bases clearing double to give UAB a six-run cushion. Brock was one of four players who had two hits in the game, along with Bella Wiggins, Lindsey Smith and Olivia Valbak. Brock also paced UAB with four RBI.
Leigha Kirby pitched a tremendous game for the Blazers, going nine innings and allowing four runs while striking out three. Caitlin Russell entered in the 10th and earned her first save of the season.
The Blazers (4-6) plated one run on three hits in the top of the first inning, highlighted by Lindsey Smith's RBI double to left center. The Bulldogs (1-9) tied it up in the bottom of the second with a solo home run to left by Katie Campbell.
In the bottom of the third, Samford loaded the bases with no outs, but UAB was able to limit the damage to one run on an RBI groundout. However, a two-run home run from Linsey Hargis in the bottom of the fourth increased Samford's lead to 4-1.
UAB got one run back in the top of the fifth on an RBI single from leadoff hitter Bella Wiggins, and then got within one at 4-3 in the sixth on an RBI sac fly from Alyssa Aguilar which scored Lindsey Smith who led off the inning with her second double of the game.
Following an Ant Henderson single in the seventh, Brock roped an RBI double which scored pinch runner Hannah Miles to tie the game at 4-4.
The two teams would go scoreless into the 10th, but that's when UAB busted the game wide open. Valbak put the Blazers ahead with an RBI single, which was followed by another RBI single from Aguilar one batter later. Lilly Crowe's sac fly would be the third run of the innings which made the score 7-4, and then Brock's bases clearing double provided the final three runs.
UAB now turns its attention to the Green and Gold Classic starting this Friday at Mary Bowers Field. The Blazers will host No. 10 Alabama, Bradley, North Alabama and Western Carolina for a three-day tournament.
