Blazer Track & Field Opens Season at Birmingham Indoor Icebreaker

BIRMINGHAM - The UAB Track & Field team will open its season on Friday at the Birmingham Indoor Icebreaker at the Birmingham Crossplex. This event was hosted by Birmingham Southern last season, but is now privately run.
Sophomore Gabby Washington also had a strong opening meet a season ago. Washington placed 2nd in the 60m Heat 1, and also placed 2nd in the 200m dash. Washington won her Section in the 200m dash.
Jasmine Dereje placed 3rd out of 54 runners in the 400m dash as a freshman last season and also won Section 3.
Regina Harris looks to start her final season strong. Harris placed 4th and broke the 3-minute mark in the 1000m dash last season.
In the field portion of the meet, Olivia Beard and Kira Taylor look to build on their solid showings from last season. Beard placed 5th in the high jump while Taylor finished 7th out of 36 jumpers.
Birthe Franck-Petersen aims for a podium finish in the shot put in this year's meet. The senior from Norway finished 6th out of 62 last season.
The shot put and the long jump events will be the first events of the day beginning at 9 a.m.
