UAB Women’s Basketball Defeats New Orleans 66-60

BIRMINGHAM – UAB women's basketball (7-3) stayed undefeated at home during non-conference play with a 66-60 victory over New Orleans (0-8) inside Bartow Arena on Wednesday afternoon.
Maddie Walsh led the Blazers with 21 points and went 4-of-7 from behind the arc. Journey Armstead registered 13 points and six assists, while Sara Bershers came away with 11 points on the afternoon.
Rayne Tucker came away with eight points and six rebounds, while Jade Weathersby led the Green and Gold with nine rebounds.
The Privateers scored the first four points of the game and maintained the lead until Bershers hit a 3-pointer with 5:11 left to play and give UAB the lead (12-10). The remainder of the quarter both teams went back and forth, but New Orleans took the lead at 22-18 at the end of the first.
In the second quarter, both teams scored early but neither team would score for two minutes. Both teams traded punches during the quarter with seven different lead changes. With 36 seconds left New Orleans made a jumper to take the lead, but Tucker gave the Blazers the lead at 34-33 with a layup and 17 seconds on the clock.
The third quarter was another battle between the two teams that saw six lead changes and one tied score. UAB had a 45-40 lead at the 4:14 mark, but the Privateers scored six straight points (45-44) with 1:32 left. With seven seconds left, Walsh made a layup to put the Blazers in front 47-46 heading into the last 10 minutes.
Once again, the score went back and forth, and the fourth quarter saw eight lead changes. The Green and Gold started to pull away at the 1:27 mark by scoring six straight points to earn a 66-60 victory. Armstead tallied nine of her 13 points in the fourth quarter.

The Blazers head to Illinois for a pair of games at Illinois State on Friday, December 20 at 6:30 p.m. CT and Southern Illinois on Sunday, December 22 at 12 p.m. CT. Both games will air live on ESPN+.
