BIRMINGHAM – UAB redshirt freshman wide receiver Kam Shanks has been named the Paul Hornung Award National Player of the Week, as announced by the Louisville Sports Commission on Tuesday.
The Paul Hornung Award Presented by Texas Roadhouse honors the most versatile player in college football. Each week, the Hornung Award names five players to the Honor Roll and the National College Football Awards Association then names a National Player of the Week, which Shanks earned for his Week 10 performance against Tulsa.
Shanks had 311 all-purpose yards, which are the most single game yards in the FBS this season. His career day included 153 receiving yards, 139 punt return yards and 19 rushing yards. He had four total touchdowns in the win with three receiving touchdowns of 67, 34 and 48, and a 58-yard punt return touchdown.
Shanks was named the AAC Special Teams Player of the Week after setting a school record with 139 punt return yards on just four returns (34.8 avg.). He now leads the nation in punt return average at 25.6 yards per return and is the only player in the nation with two punt return touchdowns this season.
Through eight games, Shanks has 41 catches for 486 yards and 10 punt returns for 256 yards. Along with 21 rushing yards and 15 kickoff return yards, his 778 total all-purpose yards lead the Blazers.
Shanks and the Blazers look to keep building momentum this coming Saturday with a home game against UConn at Protective Stadium. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m. on ESPN+.
