BIRMINGHAM – The national recognition is piling up for UAB quarterback Jalen Kitna following his school record performance in leading the Blazers to a 59-21 victory over Tulsa on Saturday.
Along with being named the AAC Offensive Player of the Week, Kitna has been named to the Davey O'Brien Award Great 8 and he earned a Manning Star of the Week.
The Davey O'Brien Award is presented at the end of the year to the nation's top quarterback and is the oldest and most prestigious national quarterback award. The Manning Award was created by the Allstate Sugar Bowl in 2004 and honors standout performances each week by the top quarterbacks in the country.
Kitna completed 25-of-32 for 404 yards and an FBS school record six passing touchdowns. He became just the second quarterback in school history to throw six touchdowns in game, joining John Whitcomb who did it twice when UAB competed in I-AA in 1993 and 1994.
In four starts, Kitna has thrown for 1,269 yards and 10 touchdowns. If Kitna was eligible to meet the NCAA minimum of games played, he would rank eighth nationally in passing yards per game at 317.3.
The Davey O'Brien National Quarterback of the Week will be announced on Tuesday at 11 a.m. CT, while the Manning National Quarterback of the Week is voted on by the fans and Blazer Nation can help Kitna win by clicking here.
Kitna and the Blazers return to action at home this coming Saturday, Nov. 9, to host UConn in their final non-conference game of the season. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m. on ESPN+.
